Although at first it may appear simple to determine what constitutes bullying behavior, it does not always fit the common stereotype of the more mature boy beating up his smaller classmate. Bullying is a multifaceted behavior that shifts with the situation, the people included, enough time and place. The Centers for Disease Control & Reduction defines bullying as "unwanted, intense behavior among school-aged children which involves a real or perceived vitality imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time." According to the definition, bullying includes several factors:
- The behavior is not welcome to the individual being bullied.
- It occurs among school-age children, so although bullying behavior may be found across age range, the technical meaning of a bully is a kid who engages in such behavior.
- The bully and bullied both understand the bully to have significantly more power in the situation, even if other factors are "equal." Many times, bullies are bigger, better, older, have significantly more friends, which leads to a real vitality imbalance and a recognized one.
- The bully either repeats the behavior, or their access to the victim indicates they'll be able to.
