The United States in the 1950s experienced designated economic progress - with a rise in processing and home engineering among a post-World Conflict II economic expansion. The Cold Conflict and its associated conflicts helped generate a politically conservative local climate in the country, as the quasi-confrontation intensified throughout the entire decade. Fear of communism caused general public Congressional hearings in both homes of Congress while anti-communism was the prevailing sentiment in the United States throughout the time. Conformity and conservatism characterized the social norms of the time. Appropriately, the 1950s in the United States are usually considered both socially traditional and highly materialistic in aspect. The 1950s are noted in USA history as a period of compliance, conformity and also, to a lesser level, of rebellion. Major U.S. occurrences during the ten years included: the Korean Conflict (1950-1953); the 1952 election of Second World Conflict hero and retired Army General (USA) Dwight D. Eisenhower as Leader and his following re-election in 1956; the Red Scare and anti-communist concerns of the McCarthy-era; and the U.S. reaction to the 1957 unveiling by the Soviet Union of the Sputnik satellite, a significant milestone in the Freezing War.
