This booklet covers almost all of the known Christmas customs at this famous old seaport. It is based on the script of your radio program that I published and narrated for BBC Radio Cleveland in 1991 and it was broadcast on Christmas day of this season. Whitby was the dock where Captain Cook, the famous Royal Navy explorer and navigator learned his trade from Quaker shipbuilders and he without doubt experienced, if not participated in this book's customs as a young apprentice seaman. Whitby was (and probably still is) a town bathed in traditional superstitions, especially those of the town's sea folk. Small marvel then so it plays such a substantial part in Bram Stoker's famous Gothic horror book Dracula. The tales about these customs were collected by me from the extensive historical data and literature of the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Culture, that i was an associate of, as well as face-to-face discussions I had fashioned with some of the townsfolk, throughout my obligations as The Collector of Dues for the Interface of Whitby in the 1980s.
