When the decision will come in that Mike Wilson, the unlikable owner of Western Branch Lodge, has truly gone absent, Sheriff Tully is delighted. Both vacationers and locals start to look like suspects when Tully discovers startling facts proving that the avalanche was no crash of character. But why would anybody want him lifeless? And then the missing individuals case becomes a murder case when Mike Wilson's body turns up in the river a few days later.
