The California gold dash of 1849, created fortunes for San Francisco merchants, whose prosperity depended on control of the city's docks. But ownership of waterfront property was hotly contested. Within an 1856 dispute over land headings, a county standard shot an outspoken newspaperman, prompting a group of merchants to organize the San Francisco Committee of Vigilance. The committee, which achieved in secret, given biased reviews to the papers, depicting itself as a necessary substitute for incompetent police. But its actual goal was quite different. In Dirty Deeds, historian Nancy J. Taniguchi attracts on the 1856 Committee's minutes - prodigal until she unearthed them - to present the first clear picture of its actions and motivations. Even after the establishment of the federal panel in 1851 to stay California claims, land titles remained confused, and the majority of the land in metropolis belonged to nobody. The acquisition of key waterfront properties in San Francisco by an ambitious politician, encouraged the 30-peculiar stores, who called themselves "the Professionals" of the Vigilance Committee, to move straight after these parcels. Regardless of the organization's assertion of focusing on behalf of legislations and order, its strategies - kidnapping, pressured deportations, and even murder - went way beyond the bounds of legislations. Dirty Deeds says the real story, in which a music group of men needed over a city in an attempt to control the most effective land on the West Coast.
