It started out with an individual child and quickly pass on: you can get high by ingesting your own shadow. At night, lights were damaged so that addicts could sip shadow in the pure light of the moon. Gangs of shadow addicts chased down children on playgrounds, curved up old girls from old age homes. Cities were damaged and governments fell. Of course, if your shadow was sipped completely, you became one of them, were required to find more shadow, at any cost, or go mad. A hundred and fifty years later, what's kept of the world is divided between the highly regimented life of those inside dome-cities that are covered from day light (and natural shadows), and the ones compelled to the dangerous, hardscrabble life in the wilds outdoors.
