The Spokane & Inland Empire Railroad began as a streetcar range, used largely for real house development, and grew into a local electric railway known for its leading edge technology and fashionable sense of style. Jay P. Graves and the other men linked with the railroad, created land improvement companies designed to provide luxury resorts, as well as plan small cities. Within a few years, the rail lines would extend from Spokane to Coeur d'Alene, and Hayden lakes to the east, with another range heading south through the Palouse, splitting at Springtime Valley, to Colfax, and Moscow.
