Growing up and residing in Kibera, Kenya, Abdul Kassim was well aware of the disproportionate range of challenges faced by women due to the extreme gender inequalities that persist in the slums. After being brought up by his aunts, his mom, and his grandmother, and possessing a child himself, he noticed that he needed to change lives. In 2002, Abdul began a team for girls called Girls Soccer in Kibera (GSK), with the hope of fostering a supportive community and providing emotional and mental support for the young ladies in the town. The soccer program was a success, however the looming problems of slum life persisted, and the young women continuing to fall victim to the most severe kinds of individuals atrocities. Indeed, it was the unyielding injustice of the conditions that led Abdul to the final outcome that soccer alone had not been enough to make the systemic changes needed. In 2006, the Kibera Young ladies Soccer Academy (KGSA) was proven to get started to help create those changes, and it persists its work today.
