Marin State, California is a report in contradictions. Its natural splendor attracts thousands of visitors each year, yet the state also is home to San Quentin Prison, one of the oldest and largest penitentiaries in the united states. Marin rates in the most notable one percent of counties countrywide in terms of affluence and general health, yet it is far above typical in drug overdoses and alcoholism, and includes a large percentage of suicides from the Golden Gate Bridge. Ken Holmes worked in the Marin State Coroner's Office for 36 years, starting as a death investigator and stopping as the three-term, elected coroner. As he grew into the job - which is different from what's depicted on tv - Holmes learned a number of skills, from finding invisible clues at death views, interviewing witnesses effectively, taking care of bystanders and reporters, setting up testimony for judge, to notifying families of a death with sensitivity and compassion. He also learned about different sorts of firearms, all sorts of drugs - prescription and against the law - and about certain surprising and probably fatal phenomena such as autoeroticism.
