The family has an option: They can stay in the near future, go underground, and be dehumanized or have a chance by staying in the house of surviving another ROM bomb attack and being blown back again to the present. They have observed another too terrible to be believed or accepted, so they blame it on a faulty water heater and allow the planet to keep in ignorant bliss for another five years.
