During the Civil Battle, one of the tales that was often told among Confederate soldiers was that Joseph E. Johnston was a split shot who was simply a better bird hunter than simply about everybody else in the South. However, as the storyline went, Johnston would never take the shot when asked to, complaining that something was incorrect with the problem that avoided him from being able to shoot the bird when it was time. The story is almost certainly apocryphal, but it was aptly used to demonstrate the Confederates' stress with a guy who everyone regarded as a capable standard. Johnston began the Civil Battle among the South's mature commanders, leading the ironically named Army of the Potomac to win in the Fight of First Bull Stepped on Irvin McDowell's Union Army. But Johnston would become known more for dropping by not being successful. Johnston was never terribly beaten in challenge, but he previously a behavior of strategically withdrawing until he previously nowhere left to retreat.
