Everybody dreams, but there are few who place any importance to the phenomena of sleep. Before we can commence to grasp or even analyze dreams, whether our dreams are symbolic or otherwise, we must first divert from our head our materialistic conceptions of what the average person called man is really.
The external or physical man is no more the person than the jacket he wears. The physical man is merely an instrument of which the real interior man or heart and soul expresses itself in the physical universe. Various materialistic ideas have been given in the past, trying to describe the mighty phenomena of dreams, but these ideas will always be pretty much unsatisfactory. Why? Because the materialist tries to describe the riddle of individuals existence lacking any individual human soul, his explanation will be unsatisfactory.
Dreams afford a parting of heart and soul and body. As soon as the senses become torpid, the interior man withdraws from the outer. You can find three different ways which afford this parting. First, natural sleep. Second, induced sleep, such as hypnotism, mesmerism or trance. Third, loss of life. Within the above two cases the person has only kept his physical body briefly, whereas in loss of life he has kept it forever.
In the truth of death, the hyperlink which unites heart and soul and body, as seen by clairvoyant eyesight, is broken, but in trance or sleep it is released. The true man is then in the astral world. He now functions in his astral body, which becomes a vehicle for expressing awareness, in the same way the physical body is an tool for expressing awareness in the waking express.
Consciousness is not annihilated when the person is in the Astral world, it is merely temporarily suspended. Likewise as in the case of death. The person is fully mindful in the astral regions clothed in the torso of the Astral subject. This Astral is in the physical and extends little beyond it. The Astral world is here and today, interpenetrating the physical, rather than in some distant region above the clouds as so many imagine.
