Two teenage girls, sisters per annum apart, are in a terrible car crash near their current address, a few miles from the Civil War battlefield at Shiloh. Penny, the older sister, is killed outright. Sandy, younger, is badly injured rather than likely to live. Inside a coma, Sandy meets people who are oddly dressed and who speak English, however, not the English she speaks. Eventually she comes from the coma, but is constantly on the see and talk to these people--doctors, nurses, soldiers--on their way to a great battle at Shiloh. As fascinating as these occurrences are, these are associated with Sandy's refusal to simply accept Penny's death. Only by witnessing the deaths of her Civil War friends is Sandy in a position to come to terms with the death of her sister and recover her own life. This fine novel offers a compassionate, even hopeful check out death, loss, and grief.
