Sunday, October 10, 2004. It's the 10th and final day of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bill Chapel, 69, pilots the "Smokey the Bear" balloon, a popular in the fiesta for days gone by 11 years. His passengers are Aaron Whitacre, 10, and Troy Wells, 14. Suddenly, a shift in winds causes the balloon to crash into a 670-foot radio tower. The balloon is hopelessly entangled together with the tower.
