The Query is a collection of stories - reports of desire - due to a straightforward question: "What's the reason behind the desire that is at you?" They were accumulated through chance encounters with strangers across America: on airplanes, in restaurants or cafés, at an automobile dealership, in a jury ready room. The reports are as diverse as the storytellers: a teenager anticipating older prom in the hands of her first love; a crusty building superintendent; an participating nuclear physicist; a widow scarred by life, with no desire; a Catholic priest on project in Rome; a long-haul truck driver; an Military colonel with tours in Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan; a seasoned exec in the twilight of profession; a thrice-married divorcee yearning for another chance; an eager young Polish immigrant, now a Fortune 500 engineer; and so many more. Listeners eavesdrop on deeply personal interactions as reports unfold. They may be struck by a sad real truth when Todd, the bankruptcy lawyer and attentive partner in the storyline "Everything Changed", shares: "I am reflecting that we don't really take the time to listen to people any more." Often the reports turn to matters of beliefs. Some storyline tellers found pray through church in the middle of despair. For others, cathedral or faith was a way to obtain hurt, leading the author to see: "I think about. How would a beliefs community - a cathedral, a mosque, a synagogue, a temple - be recognized in another way if it became known most importantly as people who listen, and not people who preach?"
