Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and abundant, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, appeared to unite some of the best blessings of life; and had resided practically twenty-one years on the planet with hardly any to distress or vex her. She was the youngest of both daughters of an most affectionate, indulgent daddy; and had, in outcome of her sister's relationship, been mistress of his house from an extremely early on period. Her mom had died too long ago for her to have significantly more than an indistinct remembrance of her caresses; and her place had been supplied by a great woman as governess, who had fallen little short of a mom in devotion. Sixteen years had Miss Taylor been in Mr. Woodhouse's family, less as a governess than a friend, very fond of both daughters, but particularly of Emma. Between them it was more the intimacy of sisters. Even before Neglect Taylor had ceased to hold the nominal office of governess, the mildness of her temper had barely allowed her to impose any restraint; and the shadow of authority being now long passed away, that they had been living together as friend and friend very mutually fastened, and Emma doing just what she liked; highly esteeming Neglect Taylor's common sense, but aimed chiefly by her own. The true evils, indeed, of Emma's situation were the energy of having somewhat too much her own way, and a disposition to think a little too well of herself; they were the cons which threatened alloy to her many enjoyments. The risk, however, was at present so unperceived, that they didn't at all get ranking as misfortunes with her. Sorrow came-a soft sorrow-but never in the form of any disagreeable consciousness.-Neglect Taylor married. It was Miss Taylor's reduction which first brought grief. It was on the wedding-day of the beloved friend that Emma first sat in mournful thought of any continuance. The wedding over, and the bride-people absent, her daddy and herself were left to dine together, with no prospect of an third to cheer a long evening. Her daddy made up himself to sleep after meal, as usual, and she had then only to sit and think of what she had lost.
