Between 1841 and 1844, Edgar Allan Poe created the genre of detective fiction with three mesmerizing reviews of a young French eccentric called C. Auguste Dupin. Years later, Dorothy Sayers would illustrate “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” as “almost a total manual of detective theory and practice.” Indeed, Poe’s short mysteries inspired the creation of many literary sleuths, included in this Sherlock Holmes.
