Between 1841 and 1844, Edgar Allan Poe created the genre of detective fiction with three mesmerizing reviews of a young French eccentric called C. Auguste Dupin. Introducing to literature the idea of making use of reason to handling crime, these tales brought Poe fame and bundle of money. Years later, Dorothy Sayers would illustrate “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” as “almost a total manual of detective theory and practice.” Indeed, Poe’s short mysteries inspired the creation of many literary sleuths, included in this Sherlock Holmes. Today, the initial Dupin reviews still stand out as absolutely engrossing page-turners.
