Japan, 1699. Over a moonlit evening in Ezogashima, the northernmost island of Japan, a woman is running through the forest when an arrow zooms out of the darkness to hit her dead. In the mean time, a world away in the location of Edo, the eight-year-old kid of Sano Ichiro, the samurai detective who may have risen to vitality and affect in the shogun’s courtroom, vanishes throughout a moon-watching party.
When Sano’s political rival, Lord Matsudaira, suggestions that the son may maintain Ezogashima, Sano’s partner, Reiko, insists on accompanying him on the anxious trip. After an eleven-day voyage through wintry and treacherous waters, they arrive at Ezogashima, only to find that Lord Matsumae, distraught at the murder of his mistress, is holding the complete province hostage until someone confesses to the crime. No one is allowed in or out of Ezogashima, and although Matsumae says Sano his kid will there be, he won't release him.
Sano strikes a package: He'll solve the murder of Matsumae’s mistress if Lord Matsumae will free the hostages and returning their kid. Soon, however, he and Reiko end up swept up in a dangerous scheme which includes clan warfare, jealous husbands, and murderous betrayal.
