Japan, March 1700. Near a Shinto shrine in the hillsides, a windstorm knocks down a tree to uncover a human skeleton, long buried and neglected. In the mean time, in the nearby city of Edo, soldiers ambush and attack Sweetheart Reiko, the better half of Sano Ichiro, the samurai detective who may have risen to electricity and influence in the shogun’s judge. The soldiers who attacked Reiko appear to participate in Sano’s fiercest foe, Lord Matsudaira, who denies all responsibility. But if the rivals are not to blame for every single other’s misfortune, who's?
Just as Sano’s strife with Matsudaira starts to escalate to the brink of warfare, the shogun requests Sano to research the roots of the mysterious skeleton, buried with swords that identify it as owned by the shogun’s cousin, who vanished forty years previously the night that a cursed kimono touched off a hearth that nearly ruined the city.
All of a sudden, Sano and Reiko are forced to confront dangerous, long-buried secrets that expose Sano’s own mom as the possible culprit. The shogun provides Sano and Reiko just three days to clear her name—or risk dropping not only their position at judge but their households’ lives.
