On the afternoon of June 25, 1876, five soldiers of the U. S. Seventh Cavalry under the command of George Armstrong Custer rode in to the valley of the tiny Big Horn River, confidently expecting to rout the Indian encampments there. Instead, the cavalry met the gathered strength of Sioux and Cheyenne warriors, who did not run as expected but switched the battle toward the military. White Bull recharged over and over, fighting before previous soldier was lifeless. The battle was Custer's Previous Stand, and White Bull was later referred to as the warrior who wiped out Custer.
In 1932 White Bull related his life history to Stanley Vestal, who corroborated the details, from other sources and well prepared this biography. "All the I told him is in a straight line and true," said White Bull. His history is a matchless bill of the life span of any Indian warrior.
