In Heian Kyo, the administrative centre city of 11th century Japan, Akitada Sugawara provides as a minor standard in the Ministry of Justice. Though blessed into a commendable family, his family's property is sadly diminished, forcing Akitada to toil fruitlessly at an unsuccessful profession. So when a vintage friend, Teacher Hirata, calls upon Akitada for help, he welcomes the chance to escape from his flat projects.
One of the professor's acquaintances is being blackmailed, and to save the Imperial University or college from scandal, Hirata asks his previous pupil to research the situation. After going for a leave of absence from the Ministry, Akitada joins the staff of the school as a browsing lecturer, and sees himself attracted into an internet of gossip and petty rivalries.
Nearly everyone he encounters is suspect, but Akitada's attentions are soon sidetracked by the murder of a girl, and the incomprehensible disappearance of any student's grandfather. The emperor himself has declared the truth a wonder, but Lord Minamoto won't believe the pious tale of his grandfather's transfiguration. Though there is absolutely no evidence of foul play, it is clear to Akitada that Minamoto's life has also become endangered.
