In 1939, just prior to the beginning of World War II, the US Lighthouse Service was merged with america Coast Guard. After the start of the war, a small group of previous lighthouse technicians were instrumental in completing a Top Magic formula mission to build up, along with M.I.T's Rays Lab, a brand new technology that would radically improve a dispatch or plane's ability to find their way with exactness, called LORAN (Long Range Navigation).
