Meet Chet, the smart and lovable dog narrator of Dog on It, who works alongside Bernie, a down-on-his-luck detective agency. Chet may have flunked out of law enforcement officials college ("I'd been the best leaper in K-9 class, which had led to all the difficulty in a way I couldn't keep in mind exactly, although bloodstream was involved"), but he's a detective through and through.
In this, their first excitement, Chet and Bernie investigate the disappearance of Madison, a teenage young lady who may or may well not have been kidnapped, but who have definitely gotten confusing with some very unsavory individuals. A well-behaved, gifted scholar, she didn't get there home after college and her divorced mother is frantic. Bernie is quick to consider the case -- something about a cash flow problem that Chet's not absolutely all that clear about -- and he's relieved, if vaguely dubious, when Madison turns up unharmed with a tale that doesn't add up. However when she disappears for another time in a week, Bernie and Chet aren't taking a chance; they kick off a full-blown research. Without a ransom demand, they're not convinced from the kidnapping, but they are sure of a very important factor: something smells funny.
Their seek out clues requires them in to the desert to biker bars and other amazing local people, with Chet's experienced nose at the forefront. Both Chet and Bernie bring their own special skills to the hunt, one which puts all of them in peril. But even as the criminals try to transform the dining tables, this duo is little or nothing if not resourceful, and the result is an uncommonly satisfying excitement.
With his doggy ways and his endearingly hardboiled tone of voice, Chet is full of heart and occasionally prone to mischief. He's intensely devoted to Bernie, who, though distracted by conditions that Chet has difficulty understanding -- like divorce, child custody, and other peculiar human concerns -- is enormously likable himself, in his flawed, all-too-human way.
