Sandy Donaldson has been doing work for a volunteer organisation in Vietnam for days gone by four years. As her deal nears its end, she is hesitant to leave so she invites her oldest friend, Anna, to come for any occasion and discover its beautiful holiday destinations. Both young ladies have unexplored links to the country. Sandy's daddy is a Vietnam veterinarian and Anna's mom was a Vietnamese boat person. During their journeys they meet Tom, an old Australian journalist who protected the warfare and plans to record on the fortieth anniversary of the Challenge of Long Tan. It really is Tom who will try to persuade Sandy's daddy to come back to Long Tan and negotiate the ghosts which have haunted him for 40 years, and suggests that Anna should delve into her mother's history. But the young ladies are reluctant, swept up in their own concerns, associations, and a small business deal that has the potential to go horribly incorrect. However, it is the near-blind Buddhist nun living by themselves in the pagoda atop one of the karsts in Halong Bay who might hold the key.
