Joshua and Christophe are twins, brought up by a blind grandmother and a huge prolonged family in a rural town on Mississippi’s Gulf Coastline. They’ve just done high school and need to find jobs, however in a faltering post-Katrina current economic climate, it’s not easy. Joshua gets work on the docks, but Christophe’s not lucky. Desperate to ease the family’s poverty, he starts off to sell drugs. He is able to cover it from his grandmother however, not his twin, and both grow increasingly estranged. Christophe’s downward spiral is accelerated first by crack, then by the reappearance of the twins’ parents: Cille, who left behind them, and Sandman, a creepy, predatory addict. Sandman taunts Christophe, eventually provoking a stunning confrontation that will in the end damn or save both twins. Ward inhabits these heroes, which world — black Creole, poor, and drug-riddled, yet shored by family and community— to a rare degree, with out a track of irony or distance.
