High above the earth Florinia, the Squires of Sark live in unimaginable prosperity and comfort.  Down in the eternal planting season of the earth, however, the local Florinians labor ceaselessly to create the valuable kyrt that brings wealth with their Sarkite masters.

Rebellion is unthinkable and impossible. Not merely do the Florinians no longer have an idea of freedom, any disruption of the essential kyrt trade would cause other planets to go up in protest, eventually destabilizing trade and resulting in a galactic war. Therefore the Trantorian Empire, whose grand plan is to unite all mankind in peace, wealth, and freedom, has stood aside and allowed the oppression to continue.

Living on the list of personnel of Florinia, Rik is a man without a storage or a recent.  He has been abducted and brainwashed. Scarcely able to speak or care for himself when he was found, Rik is extensively seen as a simpleton by the employee community where he lives.  But as his remembrances begin to come back, Rik sees himself driven with a cryptic message he is determined to deliver:  Everyone on Florinia is doomed . . . the Currents of Space are bringing destruction. If the world is evacuated, the power of Sark will end--so some would conclude the work and would wipe out the messenger. The fate of the Galaxy hangs in the total amount.
