Read by John Updike
John Updike reads six tales he has decided on from the hundred-odd he has publicized.
"A&P", recounting a moral turmoil on the checkout counter, is his most anthologized report.
"Pigeon Feathers," the longest report included, tells of a fourteen-year-old boy's fear of death and the solution he finds.
"The Family Meadow" represents a piece of America, a picnic reunion in NJ.
"The Witnesses" and "The Alligators" both deal with love, as experienced by a middle-aged man and a fifth-grade guy.
"Separating" recounts the June day when Richard and Joan Maple separate, in front of their four children.
Mr. Updike, when asked to described his approach to reading aloud, said "I make an effort to picture the items describes, and speak what distinctly, and let the feeling come through alone."
The method works beautifully.
