Tuck Underbank is a Warrow -- think a hobbit with shoes and large jewel-like eye-- moving into the peaceful Boskydells. When an unnaturally cool winter hits and the wicked Modru threatens the world, he and a number of his fellow Thornwalkers go to the High King's help. But a huge expanse of lightless blizzard called the Dimmendark (appears bad, does it not?) is dispersing within the land, and Tuck soon locates that the dark tide is going to swamp all of them. Even though they're tiny and temperamental, the Warrows get included in the military forces. However the High King doesn't have enough warriors to carry off of the horde of slobbering monsters who are approaching to attack. And the battle goes horribly incorrect, separating the friends from one another and perhaps dooming all of them.
