He pursued his goal with a strenuous passion and attained his pilot licenses, turning up hundreds of hours of air travel time with a multitude of planes and jets with one overarching goal: to 1 day travel for a major airline. After having a frustrating and finally failed attempt to travel for Delta, his long-held dream came up true when he got a job in 1985 as another Officer soaring a Boeing 727 with Eastern Airlines. As far as Joe was concerned, it was the break in the action of a life span—a dream job with a great company with a marvelous route composition and distinguishing soaring history.

But Joe acquired a problem. And he refused to admit it to himself or even to others. Joe Balzer was an alcoholic.

Joe’s alcoholism swept up with him in March 1990, when he was arrested with two other pilots for soaring a commercial airliner while consuming alcoholic beverages. His world commenced crumbling down around him. His alcoholism cost him his promising career and his dignity, drained his life personal savings, and severely tested the durability, love, and strength of his new relationship. Every major multimedia outlet, including The NY Times, Newsweek, and Time Newspaper covered the surprising storyline for the stunned American soaring general public. Refusing to have a plea deal, Joe and his fellow pilots went to trial and were found guilty. All three were delivered to federal prison. Instead of the very least security facility, however, Joe ended up at the Atlanta Government Penitentiary, long named one of the country’s most notorious prisons. Soaring Drunk is Joe’s bittersweet and extensively chilling memoir of his twisted quest to a Government courtroom, his time behind pubs, and his struggle to recapture everything he presented dear.

Today, Joe is a recovering alcoholic, celebrating more than nineteen many years of sobriety. The long road again from perdition led him to North american Airlines, where good people and a great company acknowledged a talented pilot who acquired cleaned up his act and was ready to fly again, securely.
