Summer, 1939. United kingdom journalist John Russell has just been awarded American citizenship in trade for agreeing to improve American intelligence when his lover Effi is arrested by the Gestapo. Russell hoped his new nationality would let him securely stay in Berlin with Effi and his child, however now he’s being blackmailed. To free Effi, he must agree to improve the Nazis. They know he has Soviet cable connections and want him to spread false intelligence. Russell consents but secretly offers his services to the Soviets instead.
It’s a good plan, but soon things become complicated. A Jewish female has vanished, and Russell feels compelled to find her. A female from his history, a Communist, reappears, insisting he help her reconnect with the Soviets. Meanwhile, European countries lurches toward warfare, and he must follow the latest stories—to places where American intelligence projects await him.
David Downing is the writer of several works of fiction and nonfiction for both people and children, including Zoo Train station, the first book displaying John Russell. He lives in Guildford, Britain.
