Things aren't heading well for Inspector Salvo Montalbano. His marriage with Livia is once more on the stones, and, acutely alert to his age, he's beginning to increase weary of the limitless violence he encounters. A young woman is found useless, her face one half taken off, and there is absolutely no hint of her identity except a tattoo of your sphinx moth. The tattoo links back to you her to three likewise marked young girls, all patients of the underworld sex trade, who've been rescued from the Mafia night-club circuit by the visible Catholic charity. The thing is that Montalbano's questions elicit an outcry from the Church--and the three other young girls are all lacking.
