We have been shut up to this, praying hands only can build for God. They may be God's mighty ones on the planet, His master-builders. They might be destitute of all else, but with the wrestlings and prevailings of the simple-hearted faith they can be mighty, the mightiest for God. Cathedral leaders may be gifted in every else, but without this ideal of gifts they can be as Samson shorn of his hair, or as the Temple minus the Divine existence or the Divine glory, and on whose altars the heavenly fire has died. The only protection and recovery from worldliness lay in our intense and radical spirituality; and our only hope for the living and maintenance of this high, saving spirituality, under God, is in the purest & most aggressive leadership--a leadership that knows the secret ability of prayer, the indication where the Cathedral has conquered, and that has conscience, conviction, and courage to carry her true to her symbols, true to her practices, and true to the hidings of her ability. We need this prayerful leadership; we must have it, that by the excellence and beauty of its holiness, by the power and elevation of its beliefs, by the strength and pressure of its" prayers, by the specialist and spotlessness of its example, by the hearth and contagion of its zeal, by the singularity, sublimity, and unworldliness of its piety, it may effect God, and maintain and mould the Cathedral to its heavenly style.
