This is the account of the infamous 19th-century Scottish grave robbers who weren't Scottish and didn't rob graves. These were actually Irish, and since robbing graves to supply the needs of Edinburgh's anatomists proved to be rather effort, they just had taken to murdering people - usually their neighbours - for profit. In collaboration with their common-law wives, they go about offering corpses for Dr. John Knox, an eminent Scottish physician, with considerable eagerness and gusto. The play employs their business exploits from small origins, through their days of peak result, and on to the last reckoning - established against a world that is becoming recognizably modern.
