I recognized that the troopers would squander their ammunition. Soon we'd killed almost all their horses, however the soldiers would rest behind these and blast at us. While we'd killed several Mexicans, we'd not yet lost a man. However, it was impossible to get very close to them in this manner, and I deemed it best to lead a demand against them. We had been fighting since about one o'clock, and about the middle of the Pg 101 day, since we were making no further progress, I offered the indication for the advance. The war-whoop sounded and we leaped forward from every stone within the Mexicans' lifeless horses, fighting palm to hand.
