The sexton stood in the porch of Milford meeting-house, tugging busily at the bell-rope. The old folks of the village came up stooping along the street. Children, with shiny encounters, tripped merrily beside their parents, or mimicked a graver gait, in the mindful dignity of these Weekend clothes. Spruce bachelors viewed sidelong at the very maidens, and fancied that the Sabbath sunshine made them prettier than on week times. Once the throng had mostly streamed into the porch, the sexton started to toll the bell, keeping his attention on the Reverend Mr. Hoopers door.
