"Pie in the sky by and by," is just how many Christians are characterized. We are believed, quite simply, to be so heavenly minded that we are no earthly good, to be naïve or simple-mindedly optimistic, struggling to face reality. Those critics have a spot, at least in highlighting our sights are placed beyond our earthly lifetime. We know that life here is not all there is certainly and that God is working out his good plans in us and through us. However they are incorrect in examining our understanding of the human being condition: we are not detached and uninvolved with others' pain and hardships or with society's issues and conflicts. God has given us the assignment and responsibility to worry also to love also to change lives on the planet. And we take his directions seriously. In fact, because we live affected by our very own sins and the sins of others, because we stay in a fallen world, and because we want to bring healing and desire to so many needy people, we can, ourselves, become vunerable to the negativity that surrounds us. Our challenge is for taking sin seriously also to face real life but not be overwhelmed by it. To hold our positive focus while we get our hands dirty in the messy business of helping others.
