Mike Abrashoff learned about control as captain of the USS Benfold, a guided-missile destroyer that he and his crew transformed from a dysfunctional disgrace in to the best damn ship in the U.S. Navy. He told that story in a best-selling booklet, It's Your Dispatch. Now he's distilling the lessons of this experience, plus what he's discovered as a specialist and speaker, into a series of brief, practical manuals to effective control. This is one of these, and it lets you know how to lower through the nonsense to get lasting results."Our ship, USS Benfold, was offering in the Persian Gulf in the 1997 Iraq turmoil, and the entire U.S. fleet there was snagged in a huge communications snafu," he says. "At any moment, some 7,000 information could go astray or perhaps stop moving. Ironically, Benfold and many other ships were outfitted with a new satellite system for launching Tomahawk missiles. But most radio providers hadn't been trained to use it for anything besides launching missiles. Not so John Rafalko, who pored over its guides and explained it might solve all our communications problems. I reported this to the admiral's key of staff for communications, who rejected the idea. With all the fleet verging on chaos, I went over his head and told the admiral - who erupted, chewed out his subordinate, and ordered him to look at Rafalko's plan immediately. We flew John all around the Gulf to train other providers, and suddenly the complete fleet was interacting seamlessly. This radioman preserved the Navy's bacon: My only role was to listen and returning him up."
