As the creator of Time, Fortune, and Life periodicals, Henry Luce changed the way we eat news and the way we understand our world. Born the child of missionaries, Luce spent his childhood in rural China, yet he glimpsed a milieu of electric power completely different at Hotchkiss and later at Yale. While working at a Baltimore magazine, he and Brit Hadden conceived the thought of Time: a "news-magazine" that could condense the week's happenings in a format accessible to more and more busy customers of the middle class. They launched it in 1923, and young Luce quickly became a posting titan. In 1936, after Time's surprising success-and Hadden's early on death-Luce published the first problem of Life, to which millions soon subscribed. Luce spent his later years in isolation, used sometimes with conspiracy ideas and peculiar vendettas.
