The top of the Mortmain family is Cassandra Mortmain's daddy, a writer suffering from writer's block who has not released anything since his first booklet, popular entitled Jacob Wresstling. A decade before the account begins, he took out a 40-calendar year lease over a dilapidated but beautiful castle, searching for either motivation or isolation there; now, his family is providing off the furniture to buy food. Mortmain's second better half, Topaz, is an exotically beautiful artist's model who likes communing with dynamics, sometimes wearing nothing but hip boots. Rose, the elder little princess, is a classic English beauty longing for a chance to meet some eligible (and ideally rich) young men. Cassandra, younger little princess and the story's narrator, has literary ambitions and spends lots of time producing her writing skill by "capturing" everything around her in her journal. Stephen, a handsome, devoted, live-in kid of the Mortmain's later make meals, and Thomas, the youngest Mortmain child, around off the ensemble of household individuals. Stephen, a commendable soul, is deeply in love with Cassandra, which she detects touching, but somewhat awkward; Thomas, a schoolboy, is, like Cassandra, considered "tolerably bright". Things start to occur when the Cottons, a prosperous American family, inherit close by Scoatney and become the Mortmains' new landlords. Cassandra and Rose soon become intrigued by the unmarried sons, Simon and Neil, and the inescapable relationships commence. As the journal advances, the romantic relationships Cassandra depicts become subtler and even more problematic, and she concludes her narrative over a bittersweet notice. Cassandra, despite being saddened by her first disappointment in love, can still reveal with satisfaction on the Mortmain family's improved fortunes, and appears forward to the future. I Capture the Castle is a classic coming-of-age book which stands the test of time and will endure for so long as boy-girl relationships withstand.
