Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a 2003 O Henry Reward champion, and was shortlisted for the 2002 Caine Reward for African Writing and the 2004 Orange Reward. In Crimson Hibiscus, she recounts the story of a Nigerian girl looking for freedom. Although her dad is greatly well known of their community, 15-year-old Kambili has learned a frighteningly tight and abusive aspect to this man. In lots of ways, she and her family lead a privileged life, but Kambili and her brother, Jaja, tend to be punished for failing woefully to meet their father's objectives. After browsing her aunt and cousins, Kambili dreams of being part of an caring family. But a military services coup brings new tension to Nigeria and her home, and Kambili wonders if her dreams will ever be satisfied. Adichie's impressive and poetic language unveils a land and a family full of strife, but struggling to endure. A wealthy narration by South African local Lisette Lecat correctly complements this motivating tale.
