William Wells Dark brown (1814-1884) was a visible abolitionist lecturer, novelist, playwright, and historian. Born into slavery in the Southern USA, Dark brown escaped to the North, where he functioned for abolitionist causes and was a prolific writer and lecturer. In 1847, he released the Narrative of William W. Dark brown, a Fugitive Slave, compiled by himselfClotel; or, The President's Child (1853). However, because the book was released in England, the booklet is not the first African-American book published in america. Most scholars agree that Dark brown is the first released African-American playwright.
