This landmark publication, first published in 1978, remains one of the very most influential catalogs in the Community Sciences, particularly Cultural Studies and Postcolonialism. Said is best known for explaining and critiquing "Orientalism", which he perceived as a constellation of fake assumptions underlying American attitudes toward the East. In Orientalism Said claimed a "subtle and consistent Eurocentric prejudice against Arabo-Islamic individuals and their culture." He argued that a long custom of fake and romanticized images of Asia and the Middle East in American culture had offered as an implicit justification for European countries and the US' colonial and imperial ambitions. Equally as fiercely, he denounced the practice of Arab elites who internalized the united states and English orientalists' ideas of Arabic culture. Peter Ganim's narration gives the work an elegant and knowledgable tone.
