Download The Early Poetry of Carl Sandburg: Smoke and Steel AudioBook Free
That is Carl Sandburg's third publication of poetry and his largest. Additionally it is the most wide-ranging. The subject, Smoke cigars and Metal, implies the steel industry he knew in Chicago, Gary, and Pittsburg, but he creates about many other things as well. His over-arching theme appears to be individuals life as challenging in adversity, challenging for the mere necessities of life - food, clothing, shelter, work - and challenging for the individuals soul, challenging for love, charity, justice, equality. There is also eroticism, subtly indicated, in many of these poems; Sandburg cherished beauty in every form, and the beauty of women had not been lost on him. Here you have the voice of any expert poet, a genuinely and specifically American designer, at the top of his build and love. Enjoy! A note to the listener: Sandburg, writing in the 1910s, sometimes used vocabulary that was racially and ethnically incurred in his day and even more so in ours. It seems more genuine to leave these few passages unaltered; we do speak this way once, and we prosper not to forget the fact.
