Natty Bumppo , one of the biggest heroes in American literature, is the tough frontiersman of Wayne Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Stories, some five novels which includes The Previous of the Mohicans and The Deerslayer. Though it was the ultimate quantity to be written, The Deerslayer is the first in the chronology of Natty Bumppo's life, depicting the type as a man tests himself in the wilderness and against foes for the first time. Set in the 1740s just after the beginning of the French and Indian wars, the novel starts as Natty Bumppo---known as Deerslayer---and his good friend Hurry Harry travel to Tom Hutter's house in upstate NY. Hurry plans to marry Tom's beautiful little girl Judith, while Deerslayer has come to help his good friend Chingachgook save his bride-to-be, Wah-ta-Wah, from the Huron Indians. When warfare breaks out and Hurry and Tom are captured by Indians, Deerslayer must continue his first warpath to save them. Among the earliest books to be looked at truly "American," The Deerslayer is a masterpiece of suspense, trip, and romance.
