This is the short story, The Adjustment Team, which asks the question - Do we control our future, or do unseen causes change us? Ed Fletcher is an agent with a normal life, until 1 day he leaves the home for work a few minutes later than he must have. He arrives at a terrifying, greyish, ash world. Ed rushes home and says his wife, Ruth, who dates back to the office with him. If they return, everything is normal. But he soon realizes people and things have subtly transformed. Panic-stricken, he operates to a open public phone to alert the police, and then have the telephone booth ascend heavenward with Fletcher inside.... The Adjustment Team is the basis for the feature film The Adjustment Bureau, starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.
