Puritan John Flavel (1630-1691) in Keeping the Heart (originally titled: A Saint Indeed or The Great Work of your Christian Opened and Pressed) has shown to be a reliable and timely good friend to many over the years. Using Proverbs 4:23 ("Keep the center with all vigilance for from it flow the springs of life."), Flavel creates a treatise created for all professing Christians. The aim is that the material of the center be laid bare, so that sin which exists is seen as sin and handled as a believer should and that the center be led to be clean in its devotion and passion for God. He does indeed this, not with legislations, but by constantly pointing the believer to God's elegance as the grounds and opportinity for his sanctification. Flavel is not content to basically convey information, somewhat, with each point he carefully needs aim at your very soul and deftly fires shot after gospel-saturated, God-glorifying shot. Make sure you read this reserve slowly and gradually and prayerfully, allowing each purifying blow to acquire its full affect on your center.
