"My father was in the hospital and every evening when I stopped at him, I read out loud to him. Wayne Thurber. And one night time he said, 'You really should do that on your show,' and I said, 'Dad, it's a tv set newscast. I'd love to, but how could it possibly fit?' And he said, 'How often have I ever suggested anything for your shows?' And I appreciated that he never had. But I also reminded him that there have been things such as copyrights and bills, to which he said, 'Try it. You never know.' "I began to read Thurber once a week on tv set, and continue steadily to do it whenever and wherever I could. I'm pleased to say it has sparked a mini-revival, which I trust erupts into a full-scale newfound understanding for a guy whose writings are nearly perfect. He did not intend those to be read out loud, but they are ideally fitted to the task: clean, inexpensive, vivid, full of crashes and thuds - and silences, too. And for that matter, they make wonderful tributes to stories - stories of my dad, and Rosemary Thurber's."
