In the early times of the 19th-century, Whitby is a growing port. Both the Coulson and the Campion family members make a living by the sea. Sam Coulson has three sons: Martin, Ben, and Eric. He has grand plans for expanding his whaling business; and since Seaton Campion has no sons, a married relationship between Martin and Campion's eldest princess, Alicia, will aid the fortunes of both family members. Ben Coulson, Sam's middle child, has flipped his back again on whaling to check out other pursuits. However, Ben is secretly spending so much time, waiting for the time showing his father he is not the wastrel he feels he is. Ruth Holmes also comes from a sea-faring family. Her dad is the captain of 1 of Sam Coulson's whaling boats. Newly went back from France, she attracts the attention of Ben Coulson, and he is instantly smitten. But when Martin does not return from his previous voyage, their fledging relationship is put under menace. For not only does indeed Sam blame Ruth's dad for Martin's loss of life, he sees little reason why his business plans should be thwarted by family tragedy. If Martin cannot marry Alicia, then it is Ben's obligation to use his brother's place, no matter where his own affections lie.
