California Reserve Award-winner Greer reveals a amusing and immaculately written history set in L.A., discovering the inevitability of inability. The Inability is a picaresque book about two folks who conceive and badly perform an idea to rob a Korean check-cashing store in order to fund the prototype for an impossibly ridiculous Internet application. The main character, Dude Forget, is a 20-something drifter with brains, good looks, and zero ambition except to get wealthy and never have to work. His best ally, Billy, is a professional dog walker who ties the pet dogs to the trunk bumper of his run-down car and drives very slowly but surely. Along the way we meet, amongst others, Guy's Midwestern parents; his theoretical-physicist brother; his sweetheart, Violet McKnight; and his key nemesis, Sven Transvoort, who hates Dude with unusual passion for reasons that are not immediately clear. As the history of The Inability is rather straightforward, the manner of its sharing with is anything but; it begins by the end, and proceeds in in the same way nonlinear fashion to a realization that will surprise either no person or everybody, depending on who have been attending to. Using components of pop culture, technical jargon, and noirish satire, the booklet attempts to answer fully the question not enough people ask themselves frequently: Am I failing?
