The funny man is a middling comic within an unnamed city. By day he takes care of his infant son, by evening he executes in small night clubs, sandwiched between other aspiring comics. His wife waits tables to support the family. It doesn't sound like much, but they're happy, pretty much. Before day he comes up with it. His thing. His gimmick. And everything changes. He's a headliner, and the locations increase fast. Pretty soon it's Hollywood and a starring role in a blockbuster, all because of the gimmick. Which is: He executes along with his fist in his oral cavity to the wrist. Jokes, impressions, commercials--all along with his fist in his oral cavity to the wrist. The individuals want him--are crazy for him--but only along with his fist in his oral cavity. As well as the funny man, he's tired of having his fist in his oral cavity. Therefore, the novel commences, his career's in tatters, his family's kept him, and he's on trial for taking pictures an unarmed man six times. But for the second amount of time in his life, against all probabilities, he's found love. This time around with another star, who may or may well not be mailing him coded text messages, and could or may well not be similarly in love--or even know he is accessible. A coruscating satire in our culture of star, The Funny Man documents one individual's slide from everyman to monster, even as it shows the potential for grace--and mercy--in his life.
